One Way reissued two of Duane Eddy’s RCA albums, Twangy Guitar, Silky Strings and Water Skiing, on one CD in 1998. Although the pairing is a little odd — an easy listening album and a surfing record don’t necessarily make good bedfellows — they both happen to be among Eddy’s best albums for the label. Lee Hazlewood produced Twangy Guitar, Silky Strings, and he helped create a wonderfully lush, majestic sound that allowed Eddy to showcase his romantic side. The twangy guitar can get a little samey, but it’s never incongruous on this gem of a record. Water Skiing is a full-throttle surf-rock record, and it only makes sense that Eddy tackles that style, since his endless echo was a catalyst for surf-rockers. Almost all of the songs on the album are originals, including the ingenious ripoff “Whip Off.” There’s nothing really memorable on the album, but all of the songs are opportunities for Eddy to simply play, and he plays very, very well — enough to make the album worthwhile for most serious Eddy fans. [One Way added three bonus tracks -- "Shuckin'," "Guitar Star" and "The Iguana" -- to their two-fer.]

I’d like to rent a motor boat and do some water skiing with friends. I am not looking for anything fancy.

Lake skiing:

North bay: Clear Lake or Lake Berryessa

South/East Bay: Lake Don Pedro (plus there’s three other lakes right up around Angels Camp that are nice).

That said, I think the best bay-area water-skiing destination is the Sac River Delta. Smooth water, you can always find a quiet area to ski and though the scenery lacks big mountains, it’s only 30 minutes to Disco (Discovery Bay – where you can get a boat) from Walnut Creek. Fun fun fun.

A lake in my county is being studied as to whether it is a canidate for an 'ecozone' in which a cetain section of the body of water would be designated for only boats power by electric motors or less. This would encompass maybe 5% or less of the entire body of water. It is a free country and pleasure boaters have as much right to be on the water as everyone else. But it is frustrating to see an otherwise nice lake be churned into slop.

Fossil Fuel Exhausts
There is a case for all bodies of water below a certain size to be accessible only to non-motorised craft for reasons already outlined herein, plus the fact that most of the motor-craft would use fossil fuels which
- put exhaust into the lake area (some motor exhaust goes straight into the water)
- contributes to accelerated climate change

I went water skiing two days ago and twisted my back funny. My whole back hurts clear through my neck, but the lower back hurts the most. I was just wondering what this could be? strain or sprain? Should I go see a doctor or physical therapist? I can walk, but it constantly hurts and aches. Your help is appreciated

At this point in time, you are still in an inflammatory state–you've injured yourself and your body's inflammatory reaction is trying to start the healing process. It's probably most likely a sprain/strain and chances are, it will get better on it's own over the next few days.

No need to seek medical help unless you start getting worse, start developing pain that radiates to the arm/leg that is accompanied by numbness, tingling, or focal weakness OR you develop unusual symptoms such as inability to uninate/control your bowels or profuse weakness that causes imbalance and/or falling. If these things happen, seek medical attention…immediately if the latter happens.

After three days, most people can start resuming light activity within their tolerance and use a heating pad/hot shower for aches and pains.

Why?

I have done both for years and I must agree with Peaches and Sherry, water skiing is much better. It's not that tubing isn't fun; holding on for dear life as your whipped from side to side is great. However, skiing is a different experience; you're actually gliding on the water. It still amazing to me each time I think about it; I'm gliding on this water, but if I put my hand down it can go right through it, but at the same time it is supporting my weight. You also have a lot more control in skiing, which allows you to go from side to side when you want and do whatever tricks you want.

If you still can't decide, try kneeboarding; it's kind of the best of both worlds…not too hard to learn or do but still allows you the control of skiing.

Do you know how to water ski or wakeboard?

Ok, I am learning how to water ski and wakeboard and I need some pointers. Anyone?

the absolute hardest part of wakeboarding is learning how to get up.
to begin this, sit in a ball position with your knees bent and your butt hitting your heels… your arms should be bent around the outside of your knees so that you are holding the handle in front of you..

when you are ready… keep your body in the ball postion while slightly pushing the board ahead of you.. dont try to pull yourself up, stay slightly leaning back in the ball position till you come to the surface, as soon as your board planes, simply satnd up and turn it to the side you are comfortable with and pull the handle to your front hip. many begginners have a problem of edging outside of the wake without meaning to.. to correct this.. let go with your back ahnd to keep your body aligned and stand up straight with about 60% of youre weight on your back foot, 40% on the front…

once you’re ready and comfortable to go outside the wake.. you’ll probably feel more comfortable going out to your heel side first. to do this, act like you are sitting in a chair or act like your standing on the balls of your feet and keep the handle close to you, this will improve the control of your board. to go out on your toe side edge, act like you’re standing on your toes but the important thing to remember is keep your chest pointed towards the sky and the handle close to youre front hip.. once you have this down, its all muscle memory and youll get better and better the more you practice..

I have a pair of skis from the 50's or 60's and i sanded them down to restore them and it is a ver light colored wood. It almost looks like poplar but I dont believe that Poplar is a wood that would stand up to the abuse that water will inflict.

How big of a motor do I need on a boat to water ski?

I would like to buy a used motor boat for some family fun on the water. There are a few boats with a 50HP motor for sale in my price range but I'm skeptical that it's enough power to water ski with. Is a 50HP motor enough, or should I look for something larger? Thanks
Also… The size of the boat would be a 16 to18 footer. Dad is 200lbs… Mom says she's 115lbs but she's really 130, (Don't tell her I said that), 1 average teen, and 2 little ones ages 5 & 6.

I have to agree with the poster above.

A lot also depends on the hull design and of course the weight / consturction of the boat itself. Some hulls are more efficient at "planing" than others.

A friend of mine owns a Zodiac inflatable and he has a 25hp Mercury on the back and I have been tubing behind it ( I am 6 ft 4 ! ).

However I own a fibreglass ski boat ( twin hull ) and this has an 80hp outboard – more than enough for ski-ing, but thats probably because it's a twin-hull.

To me 50hp with 5 people and sk-ng sounds a bit on the weak side, imagine how disappointed you ould be to find out you can't get a skier out of the "hole"?

Save some more money and go for at least a 75, the more the better – remember you don't have to use all the power all the time but it might be very handy when you need it most.

How did you learn to water ski?

So years ago I attempted to water ski and as soon as the boat took off, I faceplanted every time. On the 4th of July my family is having a get together and my aunt and uncle are taking out their boat and Water Skiing. It's been years and I want to take another go at it, but I'm afraid I'll make a fool out of myself and fall everytime.

So how does one actually maintain balance, get up on the water skis, etc? What muscles are you mainly focusing on? Any help would be great!

i learned in a deep lake and we just attached the rope to the tower on our boat…and a few tips are:
1) don't try to pull yourself up, let the boat do the work
2) when in the water try to keep the skis as vertical as possible
3) also when in the water keep the skis close together
4) keep your knees slightly bent once you're out of the water
5) keep your elbows bent before you get pulled up other wise the boat will pretty much yank your arms out

Any advice on slalom water skiing for the first time? I am very good on two skis, but have never tried one.?

skiing on 2 and skiing on 1 are completely different. first, look at the ski you'll be using. front boot, back open as you'd find on a combo pair? double high wraps? then think about getting up rear foot in or out? dbl boots, of course, won't let you drag the rear foot. then you could consider getting up on 2 then dropping a ski. I know so many people that use all of these methods. I've only been able to get up both feet in. then… arms straight, knees bent to chest. I try to feel the tail of the ski on my rear while I'm floating in the water. Don't stick the nose of the ski way up, but point it up and toward the boat. when you get in the water you should feel the diff once the ski touches your rear. when the boat starts to move put weight on the rear foot for a second or so then slowly start to transfer the weight more to the front while doing a "crunch" of sorts. by the time the ski is on plane my weight is 40% front 60% rear, but i'm still in a crouched position. since this sounds screwed I probabally didn't help. go by an easy-up rope from overtons. they help beginning slalomers a ton! once up play with rolling the ski on the edge by simply rolling your knees while flexing ankles, knees, hips. its all about angle. then play with your weight forward and back on the ski. from there it is "miles on the ski" practice and read everything you can about it. then you can start thinking less general and get into specifics of the mechanics of a turn…one handed vs two-where should you look-how long to pull accross the wake (ski should be on edge while crossing the wake) luck to ya brotha'.

im awesome at snow skiing and im goin Water Skiing soon 4 the first time and i was wondering wich is harder and wether my practise and skill in snow skiing will help with water skiing.

Waterskiing is much more difficult. I've been downhill skiing before I could walk, and I still can't get up on waterskis. Go figure!

Is water skiing hard becuase I have tryed before and I can't seem to get up on my skis!?

I go to the lake every year and I have not tryed in a while.

No once you get used to it. it will be really easy. just try and take it slowly when standing up and bend your knees. you will get it.
